When do you qualify for a No Claims Bonus?

A No-Claims Bonus is the most influential factor that affects the price you pay on your premium. It is granted after driving for a period without any claims. The first year you can have up to 30 per cent discounted from your premium. After five years of keeping a clean record your discount can reach 65 per cent. The amount varies depending on the company. Some insurance companies have more flexible rules. You might be allowed to make up to two claims in three years and still qualify for a discount.
When switching insurance companies you might lose your previous no-claims bonus. However, most providers offer an introductory bonus, especially when you switch your car from company owned to private. The terms and conditions vary. After reading the guide, choose a few providers from our comparison table and contact them to clear out all doubts.
If the claim is considered a ‘fault’ you will lose your discount. This rating depends on whether the insurer can recover all the costs from someone else or not. For example, if a tree falls on your car it will be a ‘fault’ claim. Although it is not your mistake, the insurer will not be able to recover the cost from another source.
If another driver is involved in the accident, the claim will be settled proportionately. Each driver will lose part of the bonus. If you have a ‘fault’ claim you will usually lose two years of discount.
