Applying for a credit card

Whilst credit cards are an efficient way of paying, used wrongly they can lead to debt and in some cases the dispossession of the card holder’s home. Many credit card providers require only a minimum payment every month, such as three percent of the balance. But if you pay just this, then it will take a very long time to pay off your debt as well as increasing your debt severely. You can stop debt building up by paying off your balance at the end of each month. One way of making sure you do this is to set up a direct debit which takes money out of your credit card account on a set day each month.
Because of the ease of paying by credit card it is possible to overspend. Ways of avoiding this are to keep receipts of all transactions. Going through these when your monthly statement comes in, gives you the chance to reassess your spending habits and locate anywhere that costs should be cut down on.
Overstepping an agreed upon credit limit will carry a fee and can also lower your credit rating, making it harder to obtain credit cards in the future. This is why it is important to check your balance regularly.
Credit cards are not to be mistaken with loans. When used as such, interest charges will rapidly increase debt, making it harder to pay off.

Credit cards charge you for cash advances. This is usually in the region of 1.5% of the cash advance or a minimum of 1.50 GBP. This is why it isn’t advisable to use your card to make cash withdrawals except when absolutely necessary.
