Insurances and extras

To apply for a credit card you will have to complete and sign an application form. An application will normally ask for personal information such as your name, date of birth, income, outgoing costs and a written consent permitting to the credit card provider to check your credit file.
There will be basic criteria which you need to fulfil before your application can be considered. These vary from one credit card provider to another, and upon the type of credit card being applied for, but typical requirements include:

  • Being aged 18 years or over.
  • Having a permanent address in the UK.
  • Having a current bank or building society account in the UK.
  • If you have a poor credit history, or no history at all, this can limit the choice of cards available to you. However many credit card providers will still issue credit cards. The drawbacks will normally be a higher APR and lower credit limit.
It is possible to check, and in some cases amend or update, your credit history using credit reference companies such as Experian or Equifax. Companies often charge for this service.
Depending on your circumstances, you will also want to consider whether an individual or joint (shared) credit card account would be most useful.
  • Individual accounts are opened under one person’s name and the credit agreement is based upon the holder’s income and assets.
  • Joint accounts are opened under two people’s names and credit agreement is based upon the sum income and assets of both holders. Both holders use the credit card and are responsible for arranging that debt is repayed. Regardless of alterations in the financial circumstances of either holder, debt must be paid off as stated in the credit agreement.
