Current account operations

Before looking at added benefits and bonuses, let's focus first on the basic types of current accounts, which are banking accounts which enable you to withdraw and deposit cash, make transfers and, in some cases, take advantage of an overdraft facility. There are a range of accounts which are available, and factors which are relevant in choosing one. What you choose depends upon your personal circumstances. THe summary below will help you identify which kind of account best suits your needs.
Premier Current accounts
These are available only to people whose income exceeds a certain amount every year, such as ₤35,000. Such accounts combine overdrafts, credit and debit cards with financial managers and a huge range of benefits
Basic Bank accounts
Basic Bank accounts are available to all people, regardless of income. They are usually held by people with no previous experience of banking and provide cash cards to withdraw money from cash machines. They do not usually come with an overdraft, credit or debit card.
Student and Young Person accounts
These accounts combine facilities such as interest free overdrafts with credit cards. Such accounts are specially designed to encourage and promote careful handling of personal finances. Many accounts provide student advisors, with whom students can discuss the management of their money. To encourage students and young people to open current accounts, accounts often offer incentives such as national railcards, or gift vouchers.
Graduate Accounts
Graduate accounts are designed to help graduates manage their debt and finances, and are usually available to graduates for up to three years after leaving university. They combine low or interest-free overdrafts with credit and debit cards.
Foreign Currency Accounts
In addition to providing all the basic facilities for banking, these accounts enable the holder to choose which currency they would like to bank in.
