North-south divide in house price inflation

26.08.2005 According to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), house price growth in the north of England is much higher than in the south.

The research carried out by Halifax showed that whilst property prices in the south-east, East Anglia and London all fell by more than one per cent in the three months leading to June this year, there were much higher increases in the northern parts of the UK. Annual house price inflation in Northern Ireland was 26.9 per cent, and followed by Scotland where prices have risen by 12.5 per cent in the twelve months to June 2005.

Overall, house prices in Scotland, Wales, Yorkshire, the north west and the north east of England were growing at an annual rate of over ten per cent, whilst the figure of inflation was less than half this number in the south and south west of England.
