Tax Credit

Some students who are in paid employment or with children may be eligible for tax credits.
Child Tax Credit is available for students in higher education who have children. While claiming a tax credit, the money from their student loan and any grants they are receiving at the time are not recognised in the students income. However, students who are in receipt of the Adult Dependent’s Grant will have this taken into consideration as a form of income when they are assessed for tax credit. Working Tax Credit may be claimed by students who are looking after a child, or are disabled, and are in paid employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week. The tax may also be claimed by mature students in paid employment for more than 30 hours a week who don’t have children. To apply for tax credit and find out if you are eligible for this visit your local Inland Revenue branch or their website at www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/taxcredits.
